About the Breeder

Enola Harrington

Ri Dearg Koons is the realization of a lifelong dream. My love for Maine Coons began the moment I saw Gingee as a tiny three-week-old on Asgard Koons’ site—I was instantly captivated. That same magic struck again with Ynot Maine Coons, especially Aoife and her charming polydactyl “baseball mitt” front paws.

I’ve spent my life raising domestic longhairs and shorthairs, caring for them from bottle-feeding to nursing them through illness, and lovingly saying goodbye when the time came. Each of my “kidz” brought joy and love into my life, with an average lifespan of 18 years, leaving behind precious memories I hold close to my heart.

Drawing on my experience as a former nurse, I provide compassionate, attentive care to every cat in my home. I also support friends with elder kitties, offering pet sitting and medical guidance whenever needed. Many pet owners seek my advice, and I take great joy in mentoring them to help their cats live happy, healthy lives.

About the Breed

A Gentle Giant with a Big Heart

Maine Coons are often called the “gentle giants” of the cat world — and for good reason. They’re large, fluffy, and full of personality, yet incredibly sweet-natured and affectionate. These cats are known for their intelligence, playful spirit, and dog-like loyalty. They love to be near their people, following you from room to room and often joining in on whatever you’re doing — but always with a calm, easygoing charm.

Maine Coons are also famously good with children, other cats, and even dogs. They’re social without being demanding, independent without being aloof — a perfect balance for families or anyone who wants a loving, interactive companion.

Breed Standard & Appearance

Maine Coons have a naturally majestic look — long, sturdy bodies, strong bone structure, and beautiful flowing coats that make them stand out in any room. Their large, tufted ears and expressive eyes give them a look of curiosity and warmth, while their big, bushy tails and silky fur add to their unmistakable charm.

Their coats are both beautiful and practical — soft, water-resistant, and surprisingly easy to maintain. Though they have long fur, it rarely mats and only needs light brushing to keep it smooth and shiny. Maine Coons also adapt their coats with the seasons, growing thicker in the winter and lighter in the warmer months.

Maine Coons come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. At Ri Dearg Koons, we specialize in reds and smokes — stunning, dramatic shades that perfectly highlight the breed’s elegance and depth. We take pride in maintaining the classic American Maine Coon look — strong, balanced features and that sweet, soulful expression — rather than the more extreme European style with overly long muzzles and tall ears.

Grooming & Care

Despite their luxurious coats, Maine Coons are fairly low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. A gentle brushing two or three times a week helps remove loose fur and keeps their coats looking their best. Regular nail trims, ear checks, and dental care are also important to keep them healthy and happy.

These cats do well on a high-quality diet that supports growth and coat health. At Ri Dearg Koons, our kittens are introduced to a variety of foods — wet food, raw freeze-dried toppers, and supplements like dehydrated egg yolk — to help them grow strong and adaptable eaters. We’re always happy to share tips on continuing their diet and routine at home.

Because they’re playful and intelligent, Maine Coons love toys that challenge them — tunnels, wands, and puzzle feeders are all great ways to keep them entertained. They enjoy interactive time with their families but also appreciate a cozy spot to lounge and observe the household.

Health & Longevity

Maine Coons are a healthy, sturdy breed, but like all purebreds, they can be predisposed to certain genetic conditions such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), PK Deficiency, and SMA.

At Ri Dearg Koons, we take health seriously — our breeding cats are seen by our family veterinarian and selected with care to ensure the best possible start for every kitten.

With regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet, and plenty of love, Maine Coons often live long, happy lives — many reaching 12 to 15 years or more. They thrive on attention, companionship, and care — and in return, they bring endless affection and joy to the families who welcome them home.

We got 2 healthy happy kittens in September. We worked with Enola who was wonderful to work with and it’s obvious she has a passion for her fur babies! Tango and Mitzi are the first coons we’ve adopted. They unique felines in how lovable they are. We are enjoying how social and silly their personalities are.
