Transparency Pledge
At Ri Dearg Koons, openness is the standard by which we operate, not an afterthought. Bringing a Maine Coon into your life is a significant and personal choice, and we believe that decision should be supported by clear communication, ethical practices, and complete honesty. From the initial planning of a pairing to the moment your kitten joins your home, we are committed to transparency at every stage.
This Transparency Pledge reflects our promise to the families who trust Ri Dearg Koons. We know that genuine trust grows from truth, and lasting relationships are built on that foundation.
Health Oversight and Genetic Responsibility
All breeding cats at Ri Dearg Koons are thoughtfully evaluated and continuously observed throughout their participation in our program. While no one can predict or promise lifelong health outcomes, we focus on making informed, responsible decisions that prioritize the long-term wellbeing of our cats and their kittens.
Our breeding cats undergo:
Routine veterinary visits, wellness exams, and vaccination maintenance.
Ongoing evaluation of temperament, structure, and overall health.
Our breeding philosophy favors sustainability and health over trends, shortcuts, or appearances.
Lifelong Line Evaluation and Owner Partnership
Ethical breeding does not stop at placement. We encourage open communication with our kitten families throughout the life of each cat.
We gather ongoing feedback to better understand health trends, temperament development, and overall quality of life. This information helps us identify patterns early, make thoughtful adjustments to our breeding program, and responsibly retire cats when appropriate.
When concerns surface within a line, they are addressed directly and transparently.
Honest Discussion of Health Outcomes
We do not believe in unrealistic claims of perfect health. Like all living beings, cats can face medical challenges even when bred with care and intention.
Our approach is grounded in honesty:
A kitten may develop a health condition at some point in its life.
When issues occur, we respond responsibly and take steps to minimize future risk.
Prospective owners deserve accurate, complete information to make informed decisions.
We value informed choice over idealized promises, because educated owners are empowered owners.
Health Guarantees and Agreements
A breeder’s contract reflects their level of accountability. At Ri Dearg Koons, our agreement is designed to be straightforward, fair, and centered on the welfare of both the kitten and the buyer.
If unforeseen circumstances arise, we approach them with compassion, responsibility, and support. Our goal is not simply placement, but peace of mind and long-term partnership.
Veterinary Care and Medical Transparency
Every Ri Dearg Koons kitten leaves our care with age-appropriate veterinary attention and documentation.
Each kitten receives:
-
Vaccinations appropriate for their age
-
Routine deworming
-
Microchipping prior to placement
-
A comprehensive veterinary examination at approximately 8 and 12-14 weeks
-
A health certificate before going home
Complete veterinary records are shared with each family. If a concern arises before pickup, you will be notified promptly. Transparency ensures the best outcome for everyone especially the kitten.
Home Environment and Social Development
Ri Dearg Koons kittens are raised within our home, not in cages or isolated environments. From birth, they are immersed in daily household activity, allowing them to develop confidence and adaptability.
-
Our socialization process includes:
-
Daily gentle handling from an early age.
-
Exposure to a variety of people, sounds, and environments.
-
Gradual introduction to other cats at appropriate developmental stages.
-
Familiarity with everyday household noises such as vacuum cleaners, music, conversation, and activity.
We share frequent photos, videos, and updates so you can follow your kitten’s development and see firsthand how they are raised.
Registration and Pedigree
All Ri Dearg Koons kittens are registered with CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association). We take pride in the lineage behind our cats and are happy to educate future owners on what CFA registration represents. Registration confirms verified ancestry, adherence to breed standards, and ethical breeding practices.
Pedigree documentation (CFA blue slip) is released upon written veterinary proof of spay or neuter in accordance with the contract terms. All kittens are placed as pets only unless otherwise explicitly stated in writing. Breeding rights are not sold.
Pricing, Deposits, and Reservation Process
We believe clarity is essential when welcoming a kitten into your home. All pricing, deposits, and payment expectations are communicated upfront, with no hidden fees or surprises.
Kitten pricing reflects pedigree quality, responsible breeding practices, veterinary care, and the significant investment required to raise healthy Maine Coons. A non-refundable holding fee equal to half of the purchase price is required to reserve a kitten, with the remaining balance due prior to delivery or pickup, as outlined in the contract.
Reservations are handled in an organized and transparent manner. Details regarding available kittens and the reservation process are provided directly to approved buyers.
Delivery and Travel Options
Kittens are picked up in person unless otherwise arranged. Ri Dearg Koons does not offer airline shipping. If courier services are required, arrangements are handled at the breeder’s discretion and expense is the responsibility of the buyer.
All transportation details, including timing, costs, and crate requirements, are discussed in advance. Our priority is ensuring each kitten’s transition to their new home is safe, calm, and handled with care.
Ethics and Breeding Philosophy
Ri Dearg Koons breeds Maine Coons out of deep respect for the breed and a commitment to preserving its health, structure, and temperament.
Our philosophy includes:
-
Maintaining limited, carefully planned litters
-
Responsibly retiring breeding cats when appropriate.
-
Placing retired cats and kittens only in approved, loving homes.
-
Refusing to support declawing, unethical breeding practices, or overbreeding.
Every decision we make is guided by the long-term welfare of the cats.
Ongoing Communication and Support
Our responsibility does not end when a kitten leaves our care. Buyers are encouraged to remain in contact and provide updates throughout the life of the cat.
Ri Dearg Koons families are asked to share photos and updates via text and the Ri Dearg Koons Family Facebook page. Continued communication allows us to track health, temperament, and overall wellbeing, supporting responsible breeding decisions moving forward.
Acknowledging the Realities of Breeding
Breeding is complex and not without challenges. We do not claim perfection, nor do we promise that every cat will remain free from health issues for life. Maine Coons, like all living beings, may develop conditions despite careful planning and testing.
When issues arise, they are addressed honestly and responsibly. Transparency, accountability, and compassion guide how we handle both successes and difficulties within our program.
Our Commitment to Retired Breeding Cats
Getting a retired breeder from a reputable cattery is often misunderstood as a “rescue,” but the two are not the same. Retired breeding cats were never unwanted or neglected; they were intentionally placed in breeding programs, carefully cared for, fed high-quality nutrition, regularly seen by veterinarians, genetically tested, and well socialized from the start. When their breeding career ends, they are thoughtfully re-homed not because they need saving, but because they are ready to transition from a professional role into full-time family life. Rescue cats, by contrast, often come from shelters or unsafe situations and may require rehabilitation, and adopting them is truly life-saving work. Both paths are valuable, but the language matters: a retired breeder is not being rescued, they are being honored and given the chance to enjoy the next chapter of life as a cherished, spoiled companion.
The Ri Dearg Koons Promise
When you welcome a Ri Dearg Koons kitten into your home, you are not simply purchasing a pet. You are entering a relationship built on trust, honesty, and responsibility.
We stand behind our kittens, our practices, and the families who place their trust in us, today and for the lifetime of every cat we produce.
“Every placement begins with honesty, care, and a commitment to matching each little prince or princess with the home that’s right for them.”
